Growing Urban Population and Rapid Industrialization to Boost Demand for Sludge Treatment Chemicals

Sludge is a semi-solid slurry that can be produced from a range of industrial processes, from water treatment, wastewater treatment or on-site sanitation systems. It contains compounds such as nitrogen, organic matter, and phosphorous. These compounds are beneficial in the agriculture sector. Sludge also releases various pollutants and pathogens. Sludge treatment can involve biological treatment of wastewater or chemical treatment of wastewater. The biological treatment is very sensitive for extreme variations in hydraulic loads. Chemical precipitation highly recommended to substitute the chemical precipitation process by phytoremediation.

Sludge treatment chemicals are used to purify water before it can be reused or released into the atmosphere. Flocculants are cost-effective as compared to other types of sludge treatment chemicals. Their demand is high in dewatering and thickening process. Growing urban population has led to increasing demand for these chemicals. Moreover, rapid industrialization is also expected to add to this demand. These chemicals are widely used in industries such as food and beverage, personal care, automotive, and paper & pulp. The demand for conditioning and stabilizing chemicals is high in various industries, owing to stringent regulatory scenario in various countries.

Manufacturing of sludge treatment chemicals is an expensive business. Moreover, the growing demand-supply gap has also led to increase in cost of these chemicals. Sludge generated from industrial waste is produced by heavy-duty chemical processing methods and is transported in large amounts through landfills. These chemicals pollute air and water and can be hazardous to aquatic life. Some of the chemicals have been banned in some countries. The use of these hazardous chemicals is regulated by law, but most states have no adequate regulations that regulate their disposal. There are several known health hazards that have been associated with exposure to these chemicals.

Most studies have found that they can cause breathing problems, neurological disorders, organ toxicity, immune system weakness, reproductive system damage, skin rashes and gastrointestinal tract disorders. People who experience any or all of the above symptoms should immediately consult their doctor and seek treatment. A toxicologist is usually needed to assess the extent of the problem and determine the right steps to take to treat it. Such scenario has led some companies to adopt an integrated approach while using sludge treatment chemicals, which includes the removal, treatment, storage and disposal of the materials safely. This is a cost-effective solution for reducing the health risk of the environment and pets and plants. Moreover, industrial facilities, both public and private, are seeking alternative means to transport hazardous substances in sludge safely to disposal sites, such as the incineration, gasification, washing and flushing.
