Things You Need to Know About Cosmetic Ingredients

The ingredients of cosmetics often come from many sources, but most consumers are unaware of them. The key ingredients present in most cosmetics include fragrances, colors, moisturizers, thickeners, preservatives, emulsifiers, and water. Ingredients can be naturally occurring or artificial, however, any potential impact on our health depends mainly on the chemical compounds they are made of. In addition to different types of chemicals, some cosmetics contain mineral oils. Mineral oils are used in various cosmetic products because they offer wide viscosity options, are stable and dermatologically well-tolerated, and have protective and lubricating properties to avoid skin dehydration. Eleven common cosmetic ingredients are Tocopherol, Dimethicone, Parabens, Titanium dioxide, Sodium lauryl sulfate, Sodium laureth sulfate, Formaldehyde, Benzones, Alcohol, Isopropyls, and Glycerols.

Non-allergenic and excellent moisturizer ingredients are thus included in many cosmetic products, such as hair gels, lip care products, sunscreens, lotions and ointments, and skin creams. The concentrations of mineral oils in cosmetics range from 1% to 99% depending on the product. Some of the most common preservatives found in cosmetic products are sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These preservatives are used to help prevent the bacteria that cause acne from developing. However, they can also cause an astringent effect on the skin. Another common type of additive is fragrances. These products add a pleasant scent, but they can also cause allergic reactions in some individuals. The most popular fragrance additives found in cosmetics are cologne, vanilla, and lavender. Each of these ingredients is a powerful one; one that should be carefully considered before applying a product. Many people are unaware that many of the chemicals that are in cosmetics contain artificial fragrances.  Some of these products are regulated by the Food and 1Drug Administration (FDA) as cosmetics. Some belong to other product categories and are regulated differently, depending on how the product is intended to be used.Cosmetics also include chemicals such as parabens and petrolatum.

Parabens are commonly used to keep the skin from drying out and petrolatum is used as an anti-freeze. The most commonly used parabens in cosmetics are ethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, and methylparaben. Parabens are commonly used as preservatives in cosmetics to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and mold. Moreover, parabens can increase cellular level damage due to UV exposure, which may even cause skin cancer. In the past, many cosmetic companies did not use any of the most effective, safest, or natural ingredients in their products. Unfortunately, the result was that a large number of women developed serious and life-threatening illnesses due to using potentially hazardous ingredients. Now, cosmetic companies are aware of the potential dangers associated with toxic ingredients and are improving their cosmetics products to ensure that they do not contain harmful chemicals. The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act do not require FDA-approved cosmetic products and ingredients before going to market, except for color additives that are not intended for use as coal tar hair dyes. On the other hand, they must be safe under labels or customary conditions. Companies are responsible for the safety of their products and ingredients.
