Transdermal drug delivery systems are advanced medical devices used to deliver drug into the bloodstream

Basically, transdermal drug delivery systems are used for the delivery of pharmaceuticals drug into the body without the need for a needle. They are used to deliver medication directly into the bloodstream. The transdermal drug system is basically a clear permeable, paper-like material, made from either polystyrene or silicone, that contains a formulated medication and a thin film protective layer that help it get into the target tissue. The outer layer of the transdermal drug delivery systems is referred to as a carrier, and it is designed to help transport the medication throughout the entire body.

It can also help protect the medication against the degradation that may occur throughout the body. Many conditions can be addressed through a transdermal drug delivery system, including pain management, nausea, and motion sickness, to name a few. Transdermal drug delivery systems are a new method of drug delivery, in which medication is delivered via the skin of the individual. The medication or drugs that have to be given to an individual patient are typically applied in the form of an ointment, patch, or plaster in this delivery system medications are slowly absorbed into the body's systemic circulation over time. The most commonly used forms of transdermal drug delivery are the inhalation of medication under the chin or the skin that comes into contact with the surface of a bed sheet, pillow, or other clothing worn by the person being treated. This delivery system works by the transdermal introduction of medication into the body's circulatory system, which is then distributed throughout the body.

The use of transdermal drug delivery systems can also be utilized for administering medication in oral form. Oral forms of medication can be applied to the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract or gastrointestinal tract by means of a suppository or aerosol spray. These types of transdermal delivery systems are useful in administering medications such as antibiotics, anti-seizure, and chemotherapy.
